Today I want to talk about an easy homemade cleaner that you can easily make yourself that will do a great job cleaning just about everything in your home and costs virtually pennies per bottle. It also smells great and is safe for kids and pets. I just call it Orange Cleaner!
My mom, bless her, was a very frugal person. She decided to start making her own spray cleaner because she was tired of the cost of Fantastik and 409 always going up and up and up. She tried a lot of different combinations, but in the end, the simplest was the best: plain white vinegar and water. Unfortunately the smell was less than desirable, and she grew tired of feeling like she was living in a pickle factory, so she stopped using it, regardless of how well it worked.
One day my dad was peeling an orange to eat, and he tossed the peels into the bucket to be taken to the compost pile. (my parents lived on a small farm) My mom saw the orange peels and got an idea. She got out a canning jar and put the orange peels in it, capped it and put it in the refrigerator. Of course everyone in the family saw it and asked my mom if she was planning on canning orange peels. She just laughed and asked us all to put the peels of any oranges we ate into the jar. |
About a week later, the jar was full. She removed it from the refrigerator and poured vinegar into the jar with the peels. She capped it tightly and set it aside in the pantry for about two weeks. In two weeks she opened up the jar and voila, the vinegar smelled like fresh oranges. She strained the liquid and diluted it half and half with water and put it in a spray bottle. It worked like a charm for cleaning just about any surface, and it made the house smell like oranges. |
