I just made a salad for dinner from my own, homegrown lettuce. No, I don't live on a farm, or even on a great deal of land. In fact, while I do have a small backyard garden, I didn't grow this lettuce in the ground. I grew this tender, delicious lettuce in a pot on my backyard deck, as you can see by the picture above.
It is very easy to grow lettuce, all you need is a pot, good dirt and either lettuce seeds or lettuce sets from a nursery. Lettuce prefers cool weather, so it is better to plant it in the spring after the last frost, and in the late summer, after the weather cools off. As it grows, you can pick fresh leaves off the outside to put on your sandwiches, and burgers, and it will keep on growing more.

At the height of the summer, when the days are longest and it's hot, lettuce usually bolts. Bolting simply means the center of the lettuce plant grows taller and taller, and then it goes to seed. If you see your lettuce starting to bolt, you need to harvest it immediately. If you don't, it will become very bitter and you will have to throw it away. Keep it watered, especially when it is hot and make sure your pot has holes in the bottom, so it can drain. Plants in pots dry out quicker than ones in the ground, so keep a close eye out and water when the soil is dry.

It takes about 6 weeks for me to grow lettuce, your results may vary, depending on where you live and the type of lettuce you choose to grow. I like Romaine, salad bowl, leaf lettuce and bibb. I have never had success growing iceberg head lettuce, only the loose leaf varieties. I plant new lettuce every couple weeks till mid September, so it's not too late to start planting now!

This is the type of pot that I prefer to grow lettuce. It take up very little space and you can grow three plants in each.
