Now that summer has arrived, so has the hot weather. If you work, or play, out in the heat then you will sweat, this is an unavoidable fact of life. Sweating is the body's mechanism to get rid of excess heat, but you also lose fluids and it is very important to replace them. The healthiest and most efficient way to do this is a drink with electrolytes to prevent dehydration. This is why you see athletes drinking Gatorade during the game at sporting events. Gatorade replaces electrolytes and prevents dehydration when a person is sweating constantly for long periods of time, like when playing ball, or working outside.
Have you see the price of Gatorade? Not exactly cheap, so I decided to try making my own. It's pretty simple to do, you can even mix the powder and package it to mix with water when you want to drink it. The recipe is very easy.
For ease of use, I usually use some type of drink mix, like Mio, Crystal Light or Kool-aid. If you prefer not to use these, you can flavor it however you like, with juice, fruit, extracts or whatever!
Ingredients:
6 teaspoons sugar (I use coconut palm sugar) 1 teaspoons salt 1 envelope of drink mix like Crystal Light, any flavor That's it. Just put it in a plastic ziploc bag and you are good to go. Add this mix to 6 cups of water and you are set. |
If you want to make this drink one bottle at a time, do it like this: 16 ounce bottle of water 1/4 teaspoon of salt 1 teaspoon of sugar 1 single serving envelope of drink mix or squirt of Mio |
real sugar can get moldy if not kept cold.
If I plan to work outside, I make two or three bottles of this and put it in a cooler with cups and ice. It tastes great and I know that not only is it restoring what I need to keep going, but it is also saving me money! Have a great weekend! Jade :) |
