When you live in the country, there are an amazing amount of things that stain your clothes. Just every day things that you would never think twice about can do a real number on fabric. It is especially bad when you are in a hurry and don't examine the pieces before you wash and dry them. That sets the stains and makes them much harder to get out. As a result, I was in need of a super stain remover!
Have you ever looked at the ingredients in a commercial stain remover?
- METHYLISOTHIAZOLINONE
- BENZISOTHIAZOLINONE
- SUBTILISIN
- ALCOHOL ETHOXYLATES
That is just a few, there are many more that sound even scarier! This was not something I wanted to put on my clothes. Your clothing is worn right next to your skin; I don't want my body absorbing any of those chemicals that may be left over from washing.
The only solution was to make my own stain pre-spray. I did a lot of research online and tried many different formulas. The one that worked the best was a combination of two different formulas that I found and I changed the detergent to Dawn from just using whatever detergent you have on hand. I had better luck with Dawn because of its degreasing qualities.

Ingredients:
Directions: Mix all ingredients in a glass bowl Put a teaspoon of it on the stain and scrub it in with a toothbrush Make sure to scrub both up and down and side to side Let stand for 30 minutes and then wash as usual. |

I have tried this homemade stain remover on blood, steak sauce, and Italian dressing. It was a success on all of them. To be honest, it does not work on oil or grease stains but it does fade them. I have never found any stain remover, even industrial with would remove oil or grease.....believe me, I have tried because my husband is a mechanic!
I usually make a batch when I have multiple stained items and use it all. I have never tried making it and storing it for any length of time. I am very happy to have found this formula, it will save me a lot of clothing and I think it is much healthier than the store bought variety.
