I have been growing increasingly concerned about the vegetables and fruits in the grocery store. With all the horror stories about genetically modified produce having poisons built right into them to kill insects (what will they do to us?) Even the so called "organic" vegetables and fruits; how do we know that they really are? Or even more, who is to say what "organic" has been twisted to mean to the people that label foods. Maybe the farmers only used 50% of the poisons that most do and that earns the name "organic."
The answer to this problem is to buy locally, something I would love to do, if I knew how. We do not have any farmer's markets in our area, I have searched and even if we did, I don't think they would be open this time of year, or offer the range of foods that I would like to be able to select from.
I have been concerned about this for months, with no answer in sight. Then a few days ago, I ran across a site called Door to Door Organics. A service that delivers locally grown (or fully investigated) fruits, vegetables and even other groceries to your door, for free, every week or every other week in four different box sizes, the contents of which are customizable. I decided to investigate further when I saw that they serviced Michigan. I plugged in my zip code and found they deliver in my area. :)
But what about the cost, I thought. I know organics cost more, but could I afford this service? Since it was only my husband and me, I would need their smallest box "the Bitty" (I had to laugh as we have a cat named Bitty) that is for 1 to 2 people. I could get either all veggies, all fruits or a mix. I chose the mix, and the cost to have it delivered is $23.99.
For the price of going out to eat once a week, we could have this service, not to mention it would cut down on our grocery bill. I decided right then that I would try this. I did discuss it with my husband, who agreed that he thought it was a good idea to try it.

 | So I set it up for deliveries on Mondays. On Friday, they send me an e mail and tell me what it going to be included in my box. If I want to change anything or include extra items, I just log into the site and my box items are right on the front page. (see the picture above and to the left) There were three things on the original list that I didn't want, so it was simply a matter of clicking the sub button and choosing a substitute. You can substitute up to 5 of the 10 different items in your box. I subbed garlic for tomatoes, 1 lb. red potatoes for a bunch of rainbow chard, and 8 oz of mushrooms for a mango. Now I will get all items we like and will use. I can hardly wait for Monday! |
As if all this isn't enough, the Door to Door Organics, also has a section on their website where you can have your own meal planner and they have recipes to correspond to the foods in your box. How cool is that?
I will be chronicling my experience with this service to let you know if it is convenient, cost effective and has good quality.
