Most people think of granola bars as a healthy snack. Some even eat them as a breakfast replacement. People think that they are full of healthy, natural ingredients and they feel good about eating them. 99% of the time those people would be wrong.
How can you avoid this problem? I know you know the answer!
Make Your OWN !
That way you can control exactly what goes into them and you can make them exactly how you like them. It's not really any more difficult to make granola bars, than it is to make cookies.
Ingredients:
- 2 cups of old fashion oats
- 2 cups Rice Krispies
- 1/4 cup mini chocolate chips (optional)
- 1/4 cup small chopped pecans (or other kind of nut) (also optional)
- 1 teaspoon vanilla
- 1/2 cup honey
- 1/2 cup smooth peanut butter
- 1/2 cup brown sugar
Instructions
Line a 9 x 13 glass dish with wax paper.
Heat the brown sugar and honey in a pan until boiling, stirring constantly.
Remove from heat and add the vanilla and peanut butter, stirring until smooth.
Mix the dry ingredients in a large bowl.
Pour the wet mixture over the dry mixture and stir immediately.
The more quickly you stir, the easier it will be.
When thoroughly mixed turn out onto the wax paper in the 9 x 13 pan and spread with a rubber spatula sprayed with cooking spray.
Push down to compact to the correct thickness.
Let cool to room temperature and then cut into your desired shapes.
Make sure to store these in an air tight container, they get stale easily.
This recipe is extremely versatile, you can get very creative with ingredient additions:
- caramel bits
- M & Ms
- coconut
- dried fruit
- cinnamon
- raisins
- extracts of any flavor
One of my favorites is dried cherries and coconut. Get creative and enjoy!
