 | Spring is almost here! Time to start your seeds! We have a fairly short growing season here, so I start quite a few plants inside. Usually the longer maturing veggies like cauliflower, brussel sprouts, cabbage and peas. This year I also decided to plant some early kale, mustard and swiss chard. I've never grown any mustard before, we shall see how they are in salad. |
| After breakfast this morning, I set about making my newspaper pots. They are easy to make and I was quickly done. Then I got a box and cut down the sides and lined the bottom with a plastic grocery bag, trimming off the handles. |  |
I placed the pots in the box, four rows of five, and then filled them with some five star soil that I had that was part Miracle Gro potting soil, and part compost. I carefully laid my seeds in, labeling them with craft sticks as I went, and pushed them down about 1/4 of an inch.
I didn't want to drown the paper pots, so I watered them thoroughly with a squirt bottle and draped some clear plastic over them to promote heat and humidity and placed the tray on the window sill.
Soon I will make the second tray, for the cucumbers and squash, which need to be started around the beginning of April. Can't wait to see the first sprouts!
