How to Make Freezer Jam Not ready to take on pressure canning your own jam? Pressure canning takes a big monetary commitment. It also takes a large chunk of time and more than a little shelf space. There is an easier way! Make jam that stores in the freezer. This method is so simple that anyone can do it and you can make your own jam in 30 minutes or less, in any flavor! Let's do this! |
Ingredients:
4 cups of fresh fruit
2 cups of sugar
1/2 cup water
1 box Sure Jell pectin
Directions:
Mix water and pectin in a saucepan
Heat to boiling and boil one minute, stirring constantly, remove from heat and set aside
Put fruit in a mixing bowl and mash with a potato masher
Add sugar to mashed fruit and stir constantly for 10 minutes until sugar is dissolved
Add pectin mixture and stir for 3 minutes, till it is the consistency you like your jam
You can use a food processor to liquefy the fruit, if you like it more like jelly
Scoop or pour jam into clean freezer jars or containers
Wipe the top of the jar with a wet paper towel (do not skip this, if you want to be able to open the jars later without super human strength)
Put on the lids and place on the counter for 30 minutes (letting the gel set up)
You can keep it in the refrigerator if you plan to eat it right away, it will stay good for about three weeks. If you want to freeze it for later use, it will be good for up to one year. This recipe is made to make in single batches. Don't try to double it to make more, it could interfere with the proper thickening and set up.
That's it! Imagine how amazed your family and friends will be when you serve them homemade jam! If you want to to be really fancy, you can add spices to your jam. Here are some of my favorite combinations:
Peaches and 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon
Cherries and 2 tablespoons of honey
Strawberries and 2 tablespoons of minced basil
Strawberries and 1 teaspoon lime zest
Apricots and 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
There are so many different combination, don't be afraid to try something you think sounds good, it probably will be! If you come up with a good recipe, don't forget to come back and share it with me!
Have a great weekend,
Jade :)
