One of the most important things that we, as human beings, have lost is the knowledge of how to be self reliant. We have also lost the understanding of why it is so important to be self reliant and self sustaining. We have grown so used to others providing us with everything we could possibly want, (as long as you have the money to pay for it) that we have no idea how to take care of ourselves.

Back in the old days, people raised their own food. They grew vegetables and raised animals. You wanted chicken and green beans for dinner, you went out and picked the beans and cleaned them and put them in a pot to boil. Then you would walk out to the chicken coop, pick out a chicken, kill it, gut it, pluck it, and voila, you had your chicken to cook for dinner.
I've had a few people tell me that how my Grandma did things was all well and good, in her time, but it would not work today. There were referring to my last post entitled 10 Things Your Grandparents Didn't Do. While there are some things that Grandma did that would not be practical today, like let your kids walk two miles alone to the store. I think that there are lots of ways we can simplify our live and do things the way they used to be done, even if you live in a condo, apartment or subdivision.
That We Do All The Time There are things that we do today as a matter of course, meaning we do them without thinking. It is just how things are done.
But it is not how things were done in the past. The way my grandparents did things is very different than how most people do them today. Below are ten things that my grandparents did not do......that most people do all the time now. Think carefully if these things have improved our lives or made things worse. Today I want to share a video from a site that I really like The Preparedness Pro. I saw this video and it occurred to me that canning hamburger was a brilliant idea. Brilliant because it will save room in my freezer, and cut out the chance that the meat will get freezer burned and ruined. It will save time, like when I am throwing together some dinner, like spaghetti or tacos, I will have precooked and deliciously marinated meat, ready to use. Not to mention that I will not lose a large portion of meat, and therefore money, if I lose power and my freezer thaws out.
I wrote this page and wanted to share it, since this weed killer is safe and effective. It is also very simple to make, only three ingredients. Check it out! Jade :)
Only Three Simple Ingredients, All Available at the Grocery Store
I always thought that making cheese was a lengthy, difficult, messy process. I was always hesitant to try it. At least I was until I found this recipe. It does not call for any funky ingredients that you would only have if you lived on a farm. It does not take a lot of time.
It isn't even messy; and the cheese that you get from it is awesome. I went outside yesterday to do some weeding and I was shocked to see how many more vegetables were ripe and ready to be picked. So much for the theory that my plants are winding down for the season. I picked a bunch of green beans (I thought they were done for the season!) and a bunch more red peppers, green peppers and banana peppers. I harvested two beautiful Romaine lettuce plants (there are at least 8 more) and a ton more leeks. I also noticed that about half of the yellow Spanish onions heads were big enough to pull up. I toted a large bucket full of veggies to the kitchen for cleaning. I didn't even get to the tomatoes yet, I will pick them later in the week. Whew! I thought the summer planting was coming to a close. Not even close.
