If you are looking to start a new tradition for Thanksgiving, why not make it story telling? Gather the family around the couch, give pillows to the kids to sit on the floor. Make some spiced cider and read the story of the first Thanksgiving. If you want a story with more excitement, how about The Pumpkin Pirates? If whimsy is more to your taste, your choice could be The Thanksgiving Dinner that Flew Away!
I used to eat cranberry sauce that you get in a can. I loved it and always looked forward to having it on Thanksgiving. Then one year, it had to be at least a decade ago, my older sister made some fresh cranberry relish and brought it on Thanksgiving. I didn't eat any that year....I remember thinking to myself "What is this lumpy stuff? I am not missing eating my lovely smooth cranberry sauce for this stuff!"
The next year, there it was again, the cranberry relish. I have to admit I was curious. I kept looking at it and wondering what it tasted like. So I slipped a spoon out of the drawer, and scooped some up of the interloper and tasted it.
I make this pie for my husband at Thanksgiving because he has diabetes and regular pumpkin pie has way too much sugar in it. You would never know this was not a regular pumpkin pie, it is just that good.
