A large majority of the human race has lost a very important skill. Awareness. Most of us have been raised in an atmosphere of safety. We believe that we are safe in our surroundings. There are no leopards in the trees above us. There are no highwaymen, blocking the streets of our subdivisions, forcing us to stop so they can rob and kill us. We can let the cable man into our homes, trusting that he is only there to fix our cable, not to kidnap us for ransom.
 | We feel relatively safe in the area that we live in. So safe that we do not bother to even look around and be aware of our surroundings as we go through our every day life. We have tunnel vision and concentrate only on the objective, such as getting to work, or picking up the dry cleaning, or going to the grocery store. We are not heedful of what is going on around us because we are only concerned with ourselves and our objectives. |
We've all seen the commercial of the guy that falls in a manhole because he is texting. Believe it or not, that has happened. People have also stepped out in front of buses and walked into glass walls. This gross inattention to your environment can end up in some pretty serious accidents, some even fatal.
In times past, being aware of your surroundings could easily mean the difference between life and death. Most of the time is it not that serious today, though it can be. It is very possible to avoid problems just by paying attention to your surroundings. Many people follow the same route, wherever they go, be it to work, the mall, the grocery store or a friend's house. It becomes routine, and therefore your brain thinks that it is safe; since nothing bad has ever happened, nothing ever will, right? WRONG! Just because you have traveled a certain way a hundred time before, does not mean you can sleepwalk through it and that is exactly what so many people do. They put themselves on autopilot and spend their time talking on their cellphone, dealing with their kids, or arguing with their companions. Basically doing everything except paying attention to their surroundings. This is very unwise.
Instead of texting your friend while walking down the street, take a look around. Are there people? Animals? What are they doing? Is what they are doing backed up by other things that you see? For instance, if you see workmen, do you see a truck? What is the name on
the truck? Do they have tools? Are they dressed as workmen?

We, as humans, need to start being more cognizant in our everyday lives. More attentive to the immediate area around us. Mindful of any people that are within your sight. Aware of vehicles that are close to you and if there are people in them. If it is dark outside, keep a flashlight on your key chain, or better yet a flashlight with a self defense tool. Stay in well lit areas. Look around and act confident and alert. Look people in the eye. Learn to listen to yourself and trust your gut. If something feels wrong or people or things look out of place, then turn around and take yourself out of the situation. No lateness for an appointment is worth the trouble you may be walking into.
Be aware. Be ready. These two simple things will increase your safety 100%.
