I have wasted way too much, that's for sure! However, I have found a way to help prevent this from happening, if not altogether, then at least for a few more days to a week. Soak your berries in the following for 10 minutes:
- 1/2 cup white vinegar
- 2 and 1/2 cups of water
After 10 minutes, drain the liquid off the berries and rinse thoroughly. Lay them out on a dishtowel to dry. After they are completely dry, I put them in a bowl and store them in the refrigerator. I prefer not to cover the bowl, but you can if you want. (non air tight is better)
The vinegar kills any mold or fungus that may be living on your berries just waiting to go to work making them rot. Soaking them in this mixture will not change the taste and you will not be able to taste any vinegar on them as long as you rinse them before drying. A simple thing, but it will save you money and aggravation.
Have a great weekend!
